Sanford church of Christ
History

Sanford church of Christ had its start in the summer of 1989, with five families that lived in Sanford, but traveled long distances to worship at various locations.   Upon the discovery that all families lived in the Sanford area the Wicker’s, the Blanton’s, the Ellington’s, the Patton’s and the Herndon’s  met at that Blanton’s and decided to start worshipping together.

The early members of the Sanford congregation met at the Civitan building in Sanford, in addition to members’ homes, and local nursing homes.  The members invited Mike and Theresa Glenn to come teach a teachers workshop over the Labor Day weekend in 1990 with 42 people attending the workshop at the Wicker’s house for the event.   The workshop provided the members with better teaching skills needed to instruct the children of the congregation.

In 1991, the congregation was able to support a full-time preacher with Mike Glenn becoming Sanford’s first full-time preacher.  Also in 1991, Sanford hosted our first Bible Bowl, after a wonderful experience at a Bible Bowl in Tennessee the year prior.  The congregation continued growing as Pat and Maria Cowden joined the congregation, and Pat continued on to preach for other congregations on an as needed basis, and began involvement in the missionary work in Honduras, and the Northern Mariana Islands, Saipan.

In 1993 construction of the church building began and was completed in 1996.
